Week 4 Blog Post

This week’s research went very well for me.  I have found that I am navigating so much better through the online library and working my way around finding exactly what I am looking for.  I found that my go to database is through EBSCO.  I have been getting very good results while conducting my search here.  I also believe that I since I have discovered a topic that I am very interested in it has helped me narrow my search down.
The topic I searched this week was in regards to becoming an effective first year teacher.  The keywords I used for this search were “first year teacher”.  There were tons of articles that resulted in this search.  I saved multiple titles so that I can go back and reference them in the future.  I was looking for articles that were in regards to being a successful first year teacher.  The one article that sparked my interest was titled, “A First Year Teacher’s Top Ten Mistakes”.  In the previous weeks research I had come up with many results of resources to help be successful.  I enjoyed looking into experiences the author had that she could admit were mistakes she made in her first year of teaching.  This has definitely brought insight to the other side of the spectrum and will help tremendously in my future research.

  1. Hello Pamela,
I haven't heard of EBSCO but i think i'll definitely try it out since your getting good results. Also i noticed that the fewer words you put in your search the better. When reading the article I also like to look into the experiences of the author, i agree it does bring some insight. I really enjoyed reading your post it was very informative and well written. What other online databases o you use?

  2. Hey Pamela!,

Your topic sounds interesting, glad to hear your research is becoming easier for you! I feel like when we find an article or book that sparks interest it makes the work easier because we like it. The books that discuss the field from people who are actually working in the field are the best ones in my opinion. It's the best way to learn because they've been there and done that. Great post.

  3. It is great to see your progression through this class. I had a similar experience with the data bases. It was very difficult initially for me to navigate and find the information that I needed. after the past couple of weeks I feel more confident. I don't think I have a favorite data base but I am no longer intimidated by the process of using them. Teaching is a great job and judging by your post you are a great communicator. Best of luck and thanks for the post!

  4. Hi Pamela,

It is something that is becoming more and more common for both men and women. As far as the databases I usually find things in Sociology, there are Librarians that focus on certain topics. Also, JSTOR works better with Boolean phrases. I take that back, sometimes. It's a hit and miss you just have to try different things. Thanks for your response.
